Since it's the weekend, will this Amoxicillin work for my uti? I have a pill bottle about a few months old, that is still good until next year, full of amoxicillin pills from my past ear infection. Since it's Saturday should I go ahead and take this for the urinary tract infection? I read online that amoxicillin treats them, so wouldn't this work?

I am currently taking amoxicillin for a UTI and I'm breast feeding? Doctors said that it was safe, and that it was okay to take whlie breastfeeding. My question, with all of the MRSA scares, and since amoxicillin is passed throught the breastmilk, can it cause a drug resistance to my child later on in life? What are the chances of that happening? Grace H replied: "There is no need to worry about that it cannot harm your baby at all or give it drug resistance as long as you dr said it was safe it is ok to continue! No need to worry about MRSA no one is resistant you cannot be more likely to catch from having amoxicillin the only way to prevent getting it is to not come into contact with it!"

I can't comment on the risk of antibiotic resistance, but I can tell you that whether your baby has ever had antibiotics they can still CONTRACT a resistant strain. So while you shouldn't abuse antibiotics avoiding them will not prevent you from contracting a resistant strain -just creating more resistant strains to be passed around. That being said the baby would receive 0.25-0.5% of a normal baby dosage so I would suspect that's far too low to cause resistance. ?./temp/~vWnIiW:1 Maternal Levels. After a single 1 gram oral dose of amoxicillin in 6 women, peak milk amoxicillin levels occurred 4 to 5 hours after the dose. Mike replied: "In theory, the answer is MAYBE. But it depends upon whether you have a bacterial UTI and, if so, what microorganism ("germ") is the cause. It's usually e.coli. Until recently, the standard treatment for a UTI was 10 days of amoxicillin, a penicillin antibiotic, but it is now ineffective against E. coli bacteria in up to 25% of cases. A combination of amoxicillin-clavulanate (Augmentin) is sometimes given for drug-resistant infections. Amoxicillin or Augmentin may be useful for UTIs caused by gram-positive organisms, including Enterococcus species and S. saprophyticus.....If you're not allergic to sulfa meds, Bactrim or Septra (both the same) are used more nowadays.....In short, the amoxicillin MAY treat your UTI and ALSO treat your dental issue."

piepiepie replied: "How long were you prescribed the meds for? Antibiotics stay in your system for a few days after treatment. I was taking amoxicillin for a UTI just awhile ago. I was given 2 weeks worth. I had mild pain, but it went away about a week or a week in a half in. If you're still feeling very bad and the home remedies for pain don't help, contact your doctor. I find that drinking lots of water while suffering from a UTI actually helps with the pain. You have to go a lot, but I'm sure you feel that way anyways, but when you go it's not as painful. Good luck!"

Nikki S replied: "it might help some, but you should be taking bactrim. its a pre ion for bacterial infections. Amox might do some good though . and lots of cranbertry juice, but uti can turn into kidney infection which is worse. U can call a doctor and ask the office or a nurse."

Laura replied: "Go buy Cran-Actin it is a cranberry capsule and is better than cranberry juice because one capsule is like drinking 9 cups of juice. The cranberry helps the bacteria not stick to your bladder. If you are just going to drink juice make sure its 100% juice. You should make an appointment with your county health department. If you qulify for a program they offer you could get your medication and dr. visit for free or at a less expensive price. You really should go see a dr b/c a UTI just gets worse and can damage your kidneys."

LINDA R replied: "You should never take any medication that is not prescribed for you by your doctor. In this case, it may not be the correct antibiotic for the bacteria causing your infection. All antibiotics do not kill all bacteria. Some antibiotics kill some bacteria, other antibiotics kill other bacteria. If you don't take the correct medication, your infection will spread and cause more problems. If your mother has an antibiotic that she needs to be taking for an infection at this point, and YOU take the medication instead, your mother will not have it to take as she is supposed to, and her infection will get worse. Also, no one should ever have antibiotics "left over" after treatment for an infection. The antibiotics need to be taken as prescribed, until they are all. If the course of medication is not completed, leftover bacteria will spread and cause more problems. You need to see a doctor. If you don't, your infection will spread and cause kidney damage and other serious problems."

stickywicket36 replied: "in case you needed it for what - do you have a whole packet. if your in the uk i would recommend you go to a walk in centre for treatment especially if you don't have a full course of amoxil with you, they will see you test your urine on the spot and give you appropriate treatment if you actually have a uti. amoxil isn't usually given for uti - its usually ciprofloxacillin or trimethoprim - dependant on local prescribing policies"
